If you are planning on going on to graduate study and have an interest in doing a graduate degree at a British or Irish university, please feel welcome to attend an information session on the Rhodes, Marshall, Mitchell, and Churchill scholarships on Tuesday, April 5, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. OR from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Hutton Honors College, 811 E. Seventh Street. These scholarships are among the most prestigious graduate scholarships offered to American students and attract strong candidates from around the country. 

Attending one of these sessions would be especially important for students who intend to apply for nomination this fall as they should begin working on their applications and talking with those who might write references as soon as possible.

Networking Nights is a collaborative event hosted by the IU Career Development Center and the IU Student Alumni Association. It is a night created to provide students the opportunity to learn the art of networking through interaction with professionals in their field of interest.
Please join IU Alumni and career professionals in diverse careers within the advertising and public relations industries for an evening of networking. Guest speakers will participate in a panel discussion focusing on their career paths, organizational opportunities, and sharing advice for students entering the world-of-work. I hope you’re doing well, I am contacting on behalf of the Native American Educational and Cultural Center (NAECC) at Purdue University. I’ve had the pleasure of working with many of you and we have had many conversations about a statewide event targeted to Native American students. I’m pleased to say that I have secured funding and would like to have you participate in our first “American Indian Student Leadership Conference.”

This event will take place on Saturday, April 30th from 9 am to 2 pm on the Purdue University campus. It’s open to Native students throughout Indiana and the surrounding areas. Attached you will find the tentative agenda for the events. Please review it and offer any recommendations. The conference planning was centered on student participation, I asked what they would gain from a conference and they were helpful in shaping the topics and sessions. I left the afternoon time block up to the students to plan and they were interested in hearing from other Native students and their experiences.

This is our first time hosting this event and luckily we don’t have to attach a registration fee. The only condition of the funding use was to feature Purdue Native alumni as some speakers. I don’t know what our anticipated population will be so we are planning for up to 30 students to attend from various colleges, universities, and even high schools.

I’ve worked with Latino colleagues across the state and they talked about the creation of the Latino Leadership Conference, which is now in its 12th year!  It is my hope we will continue with this program and host at different campuses each year.

I hope to send out the official invitation to everyone soon, by next Monday, 3/21 at the latest. We wil have our website updated with all the information and the online registration system will be activated.

AISLC Tentative Agenda Apr2011

There have been several anti-choice bills in both the United States and in Indiana that are working to de-fund Planned Parenthood and restrict access to abortion and other reproductive health services.  Indiana lawmakers have proposed close to 20 anti-choice bills including SB290 which prohibits abortion in Indiana unless a physician determines that the abortion is necessary to save the life of a pregnant woman.  For more information about these bills and what you can do, visit http://advocates.ppin.org/ and http://advocates.ppin.org/2011_legislation.aspx

Planned Parenthood of Indiana is currently organizing a rally to protest these bills.  The rally will be Tuesday March 8th at the Statehouse in Indianapolis.  Registration will be from 9:30-10:30, and the march will be from 10:30 to 11:30.  I have also heard that there will be T-shirts, buttons, and stickers handed out to participants!

The Women’s Student Association and the Planned Parenthood of Bloomington are currently organizing a carpool to transport people from Bloomington to the rally.  If you are interested in attending, please let me know by e-mailing me at mettinge@indiana.edu and letting me know if you need a ride or if you are driving and have room to bring other people.  We plan on meeting at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning before we leave.

I’ve attached a flyer with complete information, and please feel free to e-mail me with further questions.  Let all your friends know about this rally- we want this rally to be huge and successful to let the Indiana legislature know that we oppose these anti-choice bills!
